Maple Syrup (FIRST Sap Run)

Date: 03/06/2008

Number: 1

You can feel spring in the air and you can hear it (chickadees are singing a new song; sun is warm and icicles are melting)but you can't see it yet (the farm is still covered under a winter quilt of snow - BUT - I couldn't wait any longer for the snow to melt so I tapped my first maple on Thursday March 6. The sap was running!!! But... there is so much snow in the bush that last year's tap scars are at snow level or buried under the snow. I have never seen this much snow in the sugar bush! I put the rest of the taps in on Sunday March 9 after the huge snowfall we had on the weekend. The buckets are sitting just on top of the snow! The sap is running and we have 67 taps in this spring. I will tap at Sacred Heart School next week when the children are back to teach them about the sweet miracle of spring in the sugar bush!
cheers everyone- spring has arrived in Madoc!
