Robin (WAVE seen)

Date: 03/13/2008

Number: 1

The weather had been rainy, and cleared up the day before I saw the robins. Eight to ten were on the ground in my front yard, and flew into the trees with indignant peeps when I let my dogs out!

I have an interesting situation here: I put out live mealworms all year round (about 10,000 per month), and it didn't take the robins even 1 day to learn where I put them. Now, when I walk out into the yard, I hear excited peeps from all the robins watching from the trees. The ground is still frozen, so the mealworms are an important source of protein.

Many different kinds of birds eat the mealworms - blue birds, robins, blue jays, chickadees, wrens, titmouses. During the winter, I can tell how cold it is during the day by how many mealworms the birds eat. Fascinating!
