Robin (WAVE seen)

Date: 03/16/2008

Number: 1

We saw wave after wave of robins along the roadsides yesterday afternoon as we drove north through the Champlain Valley in Monkton, VT. A strong 15+ mph wind was blowing and may have grounded them. They were concentrated in the few areas that were bare of snow. We were fascinated to find them because, on the east side of the Green Mountains, the snowbanks that lined the roads were as high as our car. The robins were clearly migrating west of the mountains where the snow has almost melted away. We saw the largest concentration in Monkton, though we drove through the valley from East Middlebury to Charlotte, VT. The snow was much deeper everywhere else, pointing out different snowfall patterns can be from one place to the next.
