I wonder if they may be following the scent of the Texas Mountain Laurel in the Hill Country. In the last 40 years I have not seen such a regular flow of Monarchs moving NNE and stopping for nectar, especially on the *Sophora*.
Survival must have been good this year. The few I have caught have been in excellent condition, slightly faded but not badly worn. Here they do not seem to be laying at any of the sites I habitually visit where I have checked the *Asclepias asperula* which are in bud now.
