Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 03/22/2008

Number: 1

The first Milkweed on my ranch was either eaten by the deer or I can’t find it anymore. We have been in a fairly severe drought and it looks pretty bad right now for milkweed and nectar sources. My only flowering plants are a few Windflowers, Verbena and one yellow composite species. Had another clean Monarch fly by today. YTD rain fall has been 1.75 inches and since last November about 2 more inches. All of our recent rains were in the 0.25 or less rain that do not penetrate the soil and all the moisture is gone the next day due to high and dry winds. The time when we need to set seeds is usually in September and that was dry too.

Will keep my eye out for milkweeds, but without rain, they will be slow and small.
