YIPPEEEE! The red wings have finally returned to the farm. There were many sightings in the open fields closer to the city of Belleville, but this morning at 8:05 I heard the first songs from several male red-wings here at the farm. I was just checking the maple sap pan to add some more sap when I heard that beautiful song. The ponds here are still hiding under a cover of snow and ice, but there is runoff water starting to collect on the surface of the ponds. There is still over-the-knees deep snow in the sugar bush. The sun was shining this morning and it is about -5C, and there is a fresh dusting of new snow on everything this morning. The redwings arrived in eastern Ontario over a week ago but the depth of snow up here along Highway 7 seems to have stopped their northern migration. I have been watching and listening every day since I heard that the first flocks had crossed Lake Ontario. Welcome back to another sign of spring!!!
