Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 03/24/2008

Number: 1

The monarchs seem early this year. We do have some tropical milkweed that has emerged in our outdoor classroom, but it is only one plant and survived the winter because it is planted near a south facing brick wall. It is about six inches high and has some fully developed leaves. We have not seen any of the native milkweeds (green and tuberosa) that grow in our area yet. While we were out driving during our lunch today we did see three other monarchs so we know that some of them are making their way back. We have recently had some very strong storms with winds from the south and west and were wondering if this might have pushed the butterflies this far north.
