Hummingbird, Rufous (FIRST)

Date: 03/24/2008

Number: 1

Our first rufous of the season showed up today at the hummingbird feeder! Very exciting!! Saw one on Saturday but was only 95 percent certain so could not report it, but today's sighting is definitely a rufous. Last year in the fall we had many rufous traveling south which is not typical for us since we live in a ponderosa pine forest at almost 6,000 feet above sea level. We surmise that the reason there were so many rufous hummers last year is because it was a dry year and there were very few flowers but we just don't know for certain.
