Ice-Out

Date: 03/20/2008

Number: 1

Hello from Walden Pond State Reservation. Ice out occurred at Walden Pond this year on March 20, 2008. This is quite fitting seeing that the 20th was the first day of spring!

We had several small snow storms this year in Concord with the earliest storm taking place back in early December. We didn't have any large snow storms this winter with snow accumulations of over a foot but when the snow starts coming down in early December it makes for a long winter. At its coldest point we had about 8 inches of ice on the pond this winter. Visitors that ice fish, ice skate, snow shoe and cross country ski all had ample opportunity to engage in their recreational activities at Walden Pond this winter.

With the ice now gone we are seeing several signs of spring on the pond. Over the last few days we have had Canada Geese, Goldeneye, Bufflehead and Hooded Mergansers stopping to rest and feed as they make the journey to their northern breeding grounds.
