Monarch Larva (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/23/2008

Number: 1

Milkweed has been almost nonexistant, but Friday Kay and I checked her lower pasture and found 34 small plants between 1" and 4.5" in height. Only a handful were the taller height. Most were ground-hugging 2" stubbies with few ramettes--3 or less.

Despite all that, we found 14 eggs and brought in 12 of those.

Saturday morning I checked milkweed in Shelby Park in downtown Eagle Pass: 7 plants no eggs.

Just now I noticed one tiny caterpillar and another beginning to eat its shell.

From this I can infer that the eggs were laid on the 20th.
