Hummingbird, Rufous (FIRST)

Date: 03/24/2008

Number: 1

I've had my feeders up for about three weeks. I keep changing them with no sign of birds until Monday the 24th. I did think that I heard one flying several days before that but did not see one even though I watched the feeders closely. He has been feeding regularly since Monday.

I've feed the birds regularly for almost 20 years, with up to four feeders out (in peak years.) My feeders are quart size, which during the heyday of hummingbirds in my area, I've had four quart feeders out at one time full, and they didn't last more than two days. The last few years I've seen a drastic decline in hummingbirds. I've had very few with maybe one or two nesting. I also have at least one Calliope every year. In addition to feeders, I have about 1000 fruit trees that bloom every spring, surrounded by forest. We have an organic orchard that is in decline. We haven't sprayed anything for the past 3-4 years, but the hummers love the blooms.
