Just at supper time (6:30) while I was out stoking up the evaporator with wood and sap, I was greeted with the return of the great blue heron - he or she gave a great fly-by around the house and then it headed to the pond. Last year was the second year we had a nesting of great blue herons in a dead elm tree that sits just alongside the pond. It was great to see the heron return again. The pond is still frozen in but there is spring run-off sitting on top of the ice and snow. There were canada geese and the sound of ducks down on the pond as well this evening. The temperature is +4C and it was a beautiful day for maple syrup in the sugar bush!
