Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 03/28/2008

Number: 1

We're still finding eggs (7) in Maverick County on hierba de zizotes that gets some runoff from a yard. The large tropical milkweed a few feet away is eggless.

Good sized milkweed is now up in the hay fields on the Cunningham Ranch, but is completely egg-free. One leaf had a chew mark, but that was it.

Leads me to think no more than 2 monarchs passed through here so far.

All the milkweed along the margins of the Big Canal were burned when the Border Patrol fired the river cane. Unless we get a big rain, it will be a while before the milkweed comes up from its tuber.
