Red-winged Blackbird (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/29/2008

Number: 1

It was about 2-3 weeks ago when I spotted the first Red Wing Blackbird. It was actually the first migratory species that I saw around other than the typical Starlings & Sparrows who've been around all winter.

It is now nesting with several others near the small branch that runs through our property. It's been a ongoing contest or rivalry between the Red Wings & the Robins for territory. One would think that if either were going to build a nest that they would try to locate outside of the bounds of another species. It's not like there's not plenty of space available for them.

I'm planning a outing soon to a neighbors small marshy pond, they live about 1/8th of a mile up the road from us. When passing by there I see several Red Wings flying around or near his pond. I can hear many American Toads singing at dusk and into the night for sometime. I would like to do some study there and get a more accurate count on the number of Red Wings staying or nesting nearby there.
