I was volunteering at Rowe Sanctuary near Gibbon, Nebraska,on Saturday, March 30 and Sunday, March 31, 2008. This is near where all the sandhill cranes stay for about six weeks fattening up for their long journey north, but on these two days, we also had about fifty red-winged blackbirds at the nature center's feeders. (I took some pictures of them and would be happy to post a couple, if I knew how to do so.) They would all come to the feeders at once and then get frightened off by the strong winds blowing (or something). They would go into nearby trees and then return in a few minutes. This happened off and on for quite a while on both days. Temperatures were quite cool, 39-40.
