Today I had the double treat of siting both my first Robin and my first Bluebird of the season.
As I walked around the yard today I noticed several other signs that Spring is here! The buds on the lilacs and forsythia are swelling. The arbutus is in bud but hasn't opened yet, as my patch is in the shade. The mosses in the woods are greening up nicely in spite of the snow around them. The edges of the pond are thawing, and it's little overflow creek is tumbling merrily along the side of the road and down to the big creek. The daffodils are pushing up their brave heads in the sunnier patches where the snow has melted.
Last week the woods were almost silent except for the occassional chickadee or woodpecker or blue jay. Yesterday was rather a quiet day even though it was sunny. Just occasional bird sounds from the crows and jays. Today it was drizzly, but there seemed to be birds everywghere, in yard, field, and forest, chirping and cheeping : "Spring is here!
