Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 04/06/2008

Number: 1

The Monarch was a single butterfly, and was leisurely moving in a westward direction across our back yard. We live on 8 acres out in Cashion, and have the pleasure of having many Monarch sightings throughout the year, especially in the fall during their fall migration, there will be literally dozens and dozens of them in and moving through our woods.

I have not noticed the milkweed is up at this time, although we have the plants scattered all over the back three acres of our property. It was in the mid afternoon that we saw the butterfly. No nectaring or laying eggs, just moving through it seemed. The wind was low and the butterfly did not seem to be in any particular hurry. The butterfly appeared to be in excellent shape, very good color and it looked to be a younger butterfly, no tearing or raggedy wing tears or shreds - bright colors. I will report back when they begin to move in in larger numbers, which is right around the corner.

On any given spring day, you can spot many different butterflied where we live, the Monarch is a frequent visitor and we see them often and in nice sized groups. Thank you for your website!
