Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 02/26/2008

Number: 1

I saw one monarch yesterday (March 20) @ Botany Bay Plantation, Edisto Island, Charleston County, SC. A coworker was with me, and she said that she had seen 30+ monarchs in the same vicinity on two dates in Feb (7th and 20th) and 15-20 monarchs at the same site on 26 Feb. I think she is reliable with her identification, particularly since there are not likely any other butterflies around at that season that could be confused with monarch. The butterflies were flitting about and nectaring in an agricultural field that had a large coverage (several acres) of Winter-cress (Barbarea verna). Botany Bay is very near the Atlantic and surrounded by tidal marshlands – a perfect area for wintering monarchs.
