Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/19/2008

Number: 1

My son, Mark, got a nice surprise at noon today as he was roaming about outside, when a monarch butterfly fluttered right into his cheek. It didn't stop to chat, but just kept right on going. That is the first monarch that we've seen at our home this spring. It is a sunny, windy day (approx. 15 mph out of the NW) with a daytime temp of 60 degrees F. The wildflower false garlic (Nothoscordum bivalve) is up and blooming, ready for the monarchs, which seem to really enjoy its nectar. Also, the native milkweed Asclepias viridis (green milkweed), has just begun to emerge, seemingly overnight.
