All Other Signs of Spring

Date: 04/13/2008

Number: 1

I am taking the taps out of the maple trees today - the sap has turned cloudy and there are moths and flies in the buckets in the morning. The weather today is cool with some sun and cloud - an improvement over the past couple of rainy and wet days. We aren't getting the frosty nights that make the sap run sweet. I think the spring peepers will be out soon - we heard them down in Belleville last Wednesday, April 9 during the afternoon but so far they have not started to call up here north of Highway 7. The pond is open enough that the geese and ducks are setting up nesting sites. The great blue heron has claimed its dead elm tree again this year. The Phoebe was seen carrying chunks of bright green moss to the front of the house where she is busily building a new nest.
The sap this year was very good for us- we have bottled 54 litres of liquid gold! That was about 1260 litres of sap, and we emptied the wood shed! We have lots of sweet gifts for family and friends.
