Earthworm (FIRST sighted)

Date: 04/14/2008

Number: 1

On April 14 2008, I was preparing some soil around a power pole to plant sweet peas and was surprised to unearth an earthworm. That same little plot had 3 annuals - pansies which were greening up and one had a yellow bud on; it was also quite surprising as we did have a few days of -30C below weather this past winter and 10 inches of snow 2 weeks before. The nights occasionally still go down to -8C. We are advised to wait to garden until the May 24th weekend to be frost free, but peas can go in earlier. I have not usually been in the soil that early in the year, so don't know if it is uncommon to see earthworms now or not.
