Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/26/2008

Number: 1

I saw my first Monarch of the season on March 26 on a Burford Holly at our house. I saw 2 more on March 30 in the little meadow on Cypress Creek just below the Wimberley Square.

I saw several Monarch butterflies at Eagle Rock Ranch last Sunday afternoon, April 6.

I did not see more than two Monarchs at one time, and they were well dispersed. I may have seen more than 12, though it's hard to be sure when they fly back and forth. Most were in the woods towards the upstream end of Cypress Creek, though I saw two in the uphill pastures west of the ranch house. The few that I observed alighting briefly on flowers chose False Gromwell.

Other butterflies included 1 unidentified swallowtail (probably Black or Pipevine), several Cloudless Sulphur, Lyside Sulphur, Little Sulphur, Red Admiral, American Lady, Juniper Hairstreak, several Pearl Crescents, numerous Carolina Satyrs, Northern Cloudywing, and one other unidentified grayish skipper.

The chinaberry trees are in full flower now, and Antelope Horn milkweed are not far behind, so I expect the northward trickle of Monarchs to increase soon.
