Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 03/27/2008

Number: 1

Observation at 1:30pm today, March 27, 2008 at the University of
Dallas: 18445 E Northgate Drive, Irving, TX 7061. Temp 85 F, winds SSW 16-20mph; observed approx 50-60 monarchs per hour flying south across campus, staying very close to the ground. Our 175 acres of native bluestem/post oak savanna has historically been a roosting place as well, as I've noted to you in the past.

Yes they were flying south; in fact, my husband and I were confounded about it; the area where we observed them on the Univ of Dallas campus consists of a two sports fields carved out of 200 acres of post oak woods interspersed with bluestem meadow ---the woods where they generally roost are on the north side of the sports field. Maybe they were overnighting since the winds were strong that day and just taking a

spin? Maybe they turned back briefly because the weather was lousy up north?
It was the darndest thing.
