I just waded out to the garden (through our last remaining SNOW) and there, on the edge of the snowmelt, stood a tulip! Four more are just poking up through the snowpack. I'll estimate yesterday, April 16th, as the date the first one emerged. But this year my tulips are emerging from the snow, not from the ground. They have clearly been growing underneath the snowpack. We had near record snowfall this winter and this is the first time the snow is melting and uncovering bare ground. The snow is melting around the tulips first; the strong sunlight is striking the dark red leaves warming them and the surrounding air.
