Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 04/17/2008

Number: 1

Apparently the monarchs are still coming up the coast.

I saw 5 individuals (again very faded) yesterday (4/17) while working on Capers Island, which is just up the coast from Charleston. Three monarchs were near 320 51’ 27.95” N / 790 42’ 12.82” W. Two of these 3 were nectaring @ blooms of Hercules-club (Zanthoxylum clava-herculis), a SE Atlantic Coast native member of the citrus or rue family (Rutaceae). A fourth monarch was flying north along the maritime forest tree line inland of the dune fields. The fifth was moving north on the west border of the island along the ecotone between the upland and the tidal saltmarsh.
