Earlier this week we experienced an unusual heavy frost in central Mississippi that appears to have killed the milkweed, at least at Choctaw Trails. Monarchs are still laying eggs on the blackened tips of withering specimens; I gathered a great quantity of this and trimmed out the most heavily damaged areas in an effort to continue to provide food for the 300 or so larvae we have. Last Saturday we held a "Monarch Rescue" at this site and about 2 dozen people participated in gathering eggs and larvae and milkweed to use in home schooling and classroom activities.
