Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 04/20/2008

Number: 1

I just came back from the fields behind our house where I counted 13 Monarchs in just over an hour. Most were faded. Some of the butterflies wings were so worn and dried out you could faintly hear their wings flapping. The females were searching for milkweed/egg laying and the males were nectaring on various wildflowers. Three of the Monarchs had moderately fresh wings. Skies were sunny with high cirrus clouds and light NW winds around 5 mph with temperatures in the mid 70's. We received 1.50" of rain this past Friday which should give the young milkweed a boost.
