The 4' pile of fenced in leaves sank to 1' by the time a tiny bit of reddish brown tulip leaf peaked out of the edge of the leaf pile. It was the bulb marked with a stake that recorded this was the bulb with the largest circumference. A long snowy winter made uncovering the tulips a difficult choice. Would there be another 12" snow? We made the mistake of waiting another week before uncovering the garden. The hardware cloth over the dirt (under the leaves) was a disaster. With wire cutters we carefully tried our best to cut away the hardware cloth from the entangled tulips trying to grow through the tiny holes. Many tips of leaves were cut off by the hardware cloth. Ugly white and yellow long skinny growths curved around the ground. Hourly, the sun drenched garden made great progress at looking healthy. Eleven days later, the tulips are strong, upright, dark green leaves. We anxiously await the appearance of bulbs. Next year we will cover the planted bulbs with large, black, garbage ba
