Hummingbird, Ruby-throated (FIRST)

Date: 04/28/2008

Number: 1

The sighting being reported is the small patriarch male of a small group of 3 pairs that nest in the immediate area. (Last year we had up to five immature birds join the local nesting pairs at the feeding stations.) The male usually leads the rest of the group by one to two weeks. The local pairs make their homes in a oak in our backyard, an oak in our neighbors yard and a hickory tree in our front yard

We have three feeding stations that have been in place for three weeks. Todays sighting was the first we have seen any of the local nesting birds. We usually set the feeders out the first Saturday of April and they are usually in use by the 15th of April. Todays sighting is about two weeks later then normal. I suspect it may be related to the delayed leafing out of the Oak tree in the backyard being delayed by last years drought.
