Milkweed (FIRST sighted)

Date: 04/27/2008

Number: 1

I checked my milkweed yesterday and saw no signs of the common milkweed coming up where it usually grows. The swamp milkweed had buds below the surface of the soil, but none above ground. It finally rained yesterday afternoon and evening, and this afternoon when I checked my swamp milkweed there were finally buds peeping up here and there - literally overnight. It has been an unusually warm and dry spring here and the plants don't seem to quite know what to make of it. Very odd the way things are coming up all at the same time that usually come up in stages ? ? ?

No monarchs here yet in northwest NY state, but seeing more and more small butterflies and moths every day. Today I saw some of the tiny blues, and many white cabbage butterflies. I am watching my overwintering chrysalis and cocoons closely. They wintered outdoors in a sheltered spot, I have one black swallowtail chrysalis, one cecropia moth cocoon, two polyphemus cocoons, and one smaller unidentified cocoon.
