Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 04/27/2008

Number: 1

Today was unseasonably hot. My son and I waited until 7pm to take a walk into town. Along the way, I started noticing monarch butterflies on the ground. I found 5 in all. 3 were dead and 2 are still living.

I know I probably broke a cardinal butterfly sin, but I picked them up and brought them home. They were nearly lifeless, and the path we were traveling is heavily traveled by fellow Castaicians. (I don't think that's what we are really called.)We passed several joggers, dog walkers, bicyclers and skateboarders along the one mile walk. So, yes I'm trying to justify my actions, but surely they would have been trampled had I not picked them up. I have some blooming honey sickle in my yard and I hope they survive in order to enjoy the nectar.

I also brought home the dead ones. I use dead animals in my art work. Creepy, huh? Of course I don't kill them! Roadkill usually.
