Hummingbird, Ruby-throated (FIRST)

Date: 05/05/2008

Number: 1

Observed a male Ruby-throated Hummingbird perched in a tree on the edge of a woodland just West of our Life Lab bird-feeding stations. The sugar-water feeder is out in the Wildlife Garden and along with others on the Life Lab Tech and Teaching Crew, we were able to watch as the same male fed several times. He also seemed to be gleaning insects off many of the garden plants. Expect to see the females returning in the next few weeks. This is late for us to see our first male but it is possible he has been here for a week or more as I had a few occasions early last week to notice a fast-flying bird "buzz" by while I was bird watching with a group of Elementary students. Noticed there was a male spotted in Oregon, Ohio on 4/10 and that town is just east of the Lourdes Life Lab where we are located.
