Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/04/2008

Number: 1

On Sunday a very old / worn / tattered mom laid over 50 eggs on the swamp milkweed in my yard. By her appearance I think she might be a returning migrant and not a first generation butterfly. It's been a cold spring in our neck of the woods and all the milkweed around here is small. Today I went out into a field I like to visit to check out the common milkweed and it's also small. When I say small, I mean a couple of inches to 5-6 inches tall. It's certainly not big enough to support all these eggs / larva. Anyway, on the first three small common plants I counted over 20 eggs. I left them but will probably go back and get them tonight.
