Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 05/04/2008

Number: 1

Since Sunday, May 4, I've found 202 eggs in Indianapolis, all on milkweed that's between an inch tall and a few plants that are about eight inches tall. In Sunday, May 4, I found 52 eggs on the swamp milkweed in my yard, all very small. Last Wednesday, May 7, I found 83 eggs in a field of very small common milkweed, and last night, May 12, I found another 58 eggs on the same plants and a few others. One common milkweed plant, about five inches tall, had 17 eggs on it.

In the last 20 years of raising Monarchs I don't ever recall finding so many eggs so early in the season, nor do I remember the milkweed being so small this time of year. Why can't I ever find eggs when I really need them?
