Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/14/2008

Number: 1

05/14/08 Ames IA While doing my daily late-afternoon survey of the Iowa State University campus for Red Admiral butterflies, I saw the first Monarch of the season at 5:56 p.m. CDT. It was apparently seeking a roost in trees on the west side of Sloss Hall, flying about 25 feet up. It was a small and partly worn butterfly. The day was slightly cool for mid-May, with a high of 66 degrees, sunny, and light northerly winds. Late in the afternoon when I saw the butterfly, the temperature was still 65 F and some cirrus clouds were moving in from the west. 42.02571 N, 93.64509 W (coordinates from AcmeMapper 2.0)
