Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 05/06/2008

Number: 1

Solomon Schechter Academy spent the day at Waterford Beach. It was sunny, warm and breezy. One of our teachers and several students spotted a monarch. Both the teacher and my students insisted it was a monarch. My students have had a lot of practice with observing monarchs (we raised them last fall) so I am inclined to think they knew what they were seeing. I know that monarchs are large in comparison to most other of our native butterflies, and I did question the children about the size, but they seemed quite sure. I'm sorry I can't be more definite. Another one of my students said that she had seen one in her yard, also in Waterford.

Our milkweed is up 6-10" so we are ready for the monarchs!

I do want to mention that on the weekend following our "sighting" a nursery in Norwich, CT released hundreds of monarchs that they had obtained from Texas (including caterpillars and eggs), so if there are suddenly a lot of sightings reported in the vicinity of Norwich, CT, that may be due to the release. According to the local paper, the release would have been on the weekend of May 10th, 11th.
