Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 06/02/2008

Number: 1

I saw my first monarch of 2008 when I was parking at the local nature center early this afternoon. I trotted off after it - hardly able to believe my eyes. FINALLY the waiting is over!

The color was duller and darker than a newly emerged fall monarch, but it definitely was a monarch. Wings looked in good shaper and was not tattered as far as I could see. I didn't get close to tell if it was male or female, but it was acting like a female, flitting down into the grass/weeds searching for milkweed, then taking off again. I saw another one exhibiting the same behaviour a few hours later in a nearby area and imagine it was the same one.

The nature center is about five miles from my house, but at a lower elevation, and the milkweed there is about a week ahead of my milkweed here up at 2000 feet.

Looked around twice at some of the milkweed that is there out in the open and did not see any eggs but will now be on the lookout for them. : )
