On the last Monday of school, May 19, one tulip bravely peeped up from the soil. By the last day of school (5/22) there were at least 5 others of the 50 we planted beginning to emerge. I left town on the 24th for Colorado and just returned June 1. A couple of the tulips in my garden at home are ready to burst into bloom in the next day or two, so I hope the ones at school are in a similar situation.
Since we had such a terribly late snowfall (18" on April 26, 2008) there was snow covering the planting area well into May. We have had much less sunny weather than usual, so the soil warming process is taking even longer than usual. Tulips planted on the south-facing sides of buildings or other protective, reflective areas have already bloomed across the area. Isaw some beauties at the south side of a building on May 17th.
