Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 06/04/2008

Number: 1

A Monarch was spotted near the Lourdes Life Lab on 5/31/08. Strong winds made it a limited sighting. On 6/04/08, I watched a Monarch depositing eggs on Common Milkweed. We have been hearing of numerous Monarch sightings in Ohio ... at a State Park as well as nearby residences in rural, suburban and wetland areas. Milkweed plants are flourishing along with the native hosts of other butterflies like Spicebush and Tiger Swallowtail. Our Program raised, wintered and then released many of these natives this spring, along with numerous Cecropia and Promethea Moths. Their larvae will aid the survival of baby songbirds. It has not been a "silent spring" in and around our campus woodland although April and May have been rather cool until now. Blessed with a healthy balance of plants, insects and birds, we seem to be off to an even more spectacular year in all natural categories including the Monarchs.
