Monarch Larva (FIRST sighted)

Date: 06/06/2008

Number: 1

WI is having a classic slow Spring this year! So pleasant! Living Things are easier to observe at their awakenings this year than the past few springtimes in WI that were seriously abridged versions due to climate change.
Seemed we hurtled from winter into hot, dry summer weather. Flowers, birds, deer, butterflies, etc. seemed rushed into late summer behaviors and growth patterns. There has been barely enough time to get out to observe the 'awakening times'. Seemed native flowers just poked heads out only to mature and die back within a few short weeks. Fewer amphibians. I observed no night moths etc.
MONARCH LARVAE have appeared in healthy numbers. I started a count covering about 1/2 the area of this milkweed patch. Today counted: five eggs; eight 1st Instar;
eighteen 2nd Instar; eleven 3rd Instar.
Not one sighting of an adult Monarch. Many more swallowtail, Fritillary; and so many spring flowers growing in the wild.
