I'm a bit delayed in reporting this, but last week I released 3 brand new butterflies...a male and 2 females! I had managed to rescue and feed 3 caterpillars from the very early sightings earlier here in Onley, Va. on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. My milkweed is doing great...all 3 kinds are blooming, and some of the common type is 5 feet tall! (These are now numbering about 19 plants from the 5 that I dug up and transplanted last year.) The caterpillars I rescued were found on the butterfly weed, and they were fed a combination of common and butterfly weed. Now we are waiting for the next group of monarchs...no telling when we'll see them. This has been a very unusual spring with those early sightings and eggs laid!
