At last I have seen a Monarch, in the Winnipeg area.
I returned home (location below) and went to check for eggs, meeting a faded lady coming up to a patch of Swamp Milkweed.
She carefully hid them in among the buds and I had a difficult job to find 5 of them She seems to have avoided the common mw which has more than the usual number of weevils; and the dwarf which is in flower. The swamp milkweed is pristine as the leaf beetles have not arrived this year yet.
Earlier this afternoon, 15 miles east of Winnipeg, I found 3 eggs after checking nearly 100 dwarf and common mw. There the eggs were laid high up on very clean, large stems of common mw with buds.
