Monarchs were quite late arriving in southern Manitoba this year. I saw two adults flying in different locations in south Winnipeg on 24 June 2008, the first this season. I was out of province from June 13 through June 20, but asked two friends who live in different parts of the city and know and watch for monarchs; neither has yet seen adults. One of these people discovered newly-hatch monarch caterpillars on milkweed in her garden on 24 June 2008. It appears that monarchs arrived in the Winnipeg area about 21 June 2008 but not many have reached our area yet.
