Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 07/05/2008

Number: 1

Thanks to Nature New Brunswick and Jim Wilson for monitoring New Brunswick Monarchs, and to Don Davis for forwarding them to Journey North:

This afternoon, on a quest for some Showy Lay slippers orchids in the
Moncton region (the local of which will have to stay secret to protect
the plants) me and Richard Perron had to cross a field of wild flowers
for maybe 800 meters and we put a number of butterflies to wing. In
the lot that comprised I would say close to a dozen species (many of
which I am still trying to ID) we saw a least 3 different Monarchs.
Seems like a good start this year for this species . We also saw
several Viceroy (was cool to be able to compare there size to that of
the nearby Monarchs ) and several large Fritilitary that I will have
to get back there to bring down to species.
