Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 07/28/2008

Number: 1

I thought someone might be interested in knowing how the Monarchs are doing in northwestern Wisconsin this summer. Here's my personal report.
They came late, and we had a cold spring....well into June.....but we were lucky enough to get a female to lay a few eggs in our milkweed patch. Those developed fairly well.......I sheltered some of the young caterpillars under netting for a couple of weeks in hopes of increasing their chances of success. I believe this helped, but, of course, I don't know how they would have made out without the netting. In addition, when the township began cutting roadside weeds towards the end of June, I went out and collected as many caterpillars and eggs from milkweed that I suspected would soon be cut down. These I transplanted to our patch, some under the netting, some outside. At one point, I counted 17 caterpillars, though I thought there should have been 30 or more. I know that a couple died. From this cycle we have had eight adults emerge fr
