Signs of Fall

Date: 08/21/2008

Number: 1

Late this afternoon and evening (August 21, 2008) we saw hundreds and hundreds of swallows in Ponce Inlet, Florida, along the Halifax River. Friends in New Smyrna Beach along the river saw the same thing today. Have the birds been blown off course by Tropical Storm Fay?

We estimate 5 to 7 miles (as the crow flies) between our home in Ponce Inlet and our friends home in New Smyrna Beach.

We are not experts on swallows. After looking in bird books and on the internet, we think that they may be Bank Swallows. The birds had some white underneath and slightly forked tails of one (1) inch or less.

There were hundreds of them, at times turning the sky black.
