Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 09/01/2008

Number: 1

My granddaughter and I observed a monarch in my butterfly garden, nectoring, and hoped that it/she would lay an egg. A couple of weeks later I found 3 Monarch caterpillars eating the milkweed pods, not leaves, which I thought was unusual. They appeared to be in two to three different stages. I watched them for two or three days then two disappeared. I decided to try to capture the last one. I picked the sprig of milkweed holding him, stuck it into a pot of soil, added a tomato cage and a net and bravo! The next day it had gone into it's "J" stage, then the next day I had a chrysalis attached at the top of the cage. Of course the milkweed died. I will try to send pictures via e-mail.
