We've been looking for the past week or so for some caterpillars for classroom observation. After MUCH searching, we found just one monarch pupae in a small patch of milkweed near an irrigation ditch out in the country. We saw several signs that would suggest there were more caterpillars in the area, but found just the one. While there, we also spotted a monarch butterfly among the milkweed.
