Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 08/28/2008

Number: 1

There are seven empty Monarch chrysalises attached to the eaves of our garage that have yielded butterflies. Early in August we moved 10 caterpillars from the milkweed patches to the patch near the garage. We have two caterpillars being raised in a large glass jar in the house, both raised from the egg stages.

We have patches of common milkweed in our six acre field. A survey of part of the field yielded a count of 20 Monarch caterpillars on August 17.

The process continues as we find more caterpillars in our milkweed and more are attaching to form chrysalises.

As of the time of this post (Sept 9) we estimate that we have direct evidence of about 25 Monarch butterflies will have emerged from chrysalises this year. Some are very late and will not be available for migration until late September. Probably too late to make a successful migration south.
