Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/06/2008

Number: 500

In several trees bordering a prairie and a corn field, a block from Interstate Highway 80, we saw roughly five hundred monarch butterflies roosting. This is my first sighting so that is the best guess my husband and I came up with in terms as a number. We came upon them about 5pm on Saturday Sept. 6, observed them for 15 minutes, then returned to find them still there about 8am Sunday Sept. 7th and observed for another 15 minutes. They were on many of the purple thistle flowers nearby.
